We (as the last of the human species) might be off the hook for the demise of the Neanderthals in Europe around 40,000 years ago.

New research based on stalagmites from Romania shows two long periods of cold. The first - 1,000 years in duration and the second at 600 years - both occurred right around the time Neanderthals disappeared and modern humans filled their void in Europe.
